We're Attracted To People Who Look Like Us, New Study Says

Did you hear about the latest study on attraction? It turns out that we’re attracted to people who look like us, according to research published in Evolution and Human Behavior.

And why are we attracted to people who look like us?

The scientists from the University of Queensland Australia conducted the study by organizing speed-dating sessions with 682 heterosexual participants, resulting in 2,285 interactions.

Half of the interactions were between partners of the same ethnicity, while the other half involved partners of different ethnicities.

During the speed-dating sessions, participants had three-minute rounds to interact with each other, after which they completed a questionnaire to rate their partner’s facial attractiveness and perceived kindness.

The study revealed that individuals with similar facial features found each other more attractive. Moreover, participants of the same ethnicity were more likely to consider each other attractive compared to those of a different ethnicity.

Interestingly, ratings of kindness were not influenced by ethnicity but were higher among individuals with similar facial features, regardless of ethnic background.

Contrary to the belief that couples start looking alike over time, a theory debunked by Stanford University in 2020, the researchers suggested that facial similarity in couples could be due to a preference for similarity in romantic partners.

They proposed that a similar appearance creates a sense of kinship, leading to feelings of comfort, familiarity, and belonging.

The study also found that certain facial features, considered more masculine, were associated with attractiveness in men but not in women. The psychologists interpreted this as evidence of a genetic basis for our preferences in facial features, potentially linked to fitness benefits signaled by those features.

This study is not the first to explore the concept of “doppelbangers” or the influence of masculine versus feminine facial features on attraction. In a 2013 study conducted by Norwegian scientists at the Universities of Oslo and Tromsø, participants were shown variations of their partner’s faces and asked to choose the most appealing one.

These findings shed light on the intriguing topic of attraction and suggest that our preference for partners who resemble us may have a biological basis.

So now that you know that we’re naturally attracted to people who look like us – our doppelbangers. So, get ready to meet your look-alike soulmate!
