   It was the color of the little dress she chose for their first date, the color of the kitten heels she picked out to match. It was the color of the town car he sent to pick her up, ever the gentleman. It was the color of the leather watch he checked, repeatedly, near-giddy for her arrival. It was the way he took his coffee, at least how he had always ordered it from her. It was the color of the sky as they strolled, no stars or moon visible. It was the color of thirty-six of the keys on his baby grand piano in his living room, where he played Moonlight Sonata for her. It became the color of his personality as everything she’d dismissed as a passing fancy became a character in his macabre tragedy. It was the color of his eyes and of the pet name of the Hollywood actress with which he’d become obsessed. It was the color of the nylon stockings that he shoved roughly in her mouth. It was the color of the type in the news story that began “A woman’s body was found on January 15th, an anniversary of sorts for what police are simply calling ‘another cold and calculated killing’’. It was the color of the hair on the woman the police notified of the crime, the color of the mascara that ran down her face as she cried. It was the color of the long dress her mother picked out for her funeral, the color of the veil she picked out to match.
