Common ground is defined as “opinions or interests shared by each of two or more parties”. We all connect with one another on these varying topics, all throughout the days. The weather, politics, alumni programs, home towns, and so many more – ranging from general to personal. The more personal it is, the deeper the connection will be between these two or more people. More often than not, common ground is not met on a global scale, as everyone’s lives differ greatly depending on where you are from and where you live. Weather is a prime example of a global common ground, shared by all. Do you ever notice how discussions of weather come up quite often as a way to connect with someone?
This COVID-19 situation we are in has so many angles to it, the negative being very apparent. BUT, see what has happened – we all now have a common ground to connect on. One that is very personal as we are all feeling the fear of the virus and the unknown of it all, processing it in whatever way we are. The entire planet is feeling the same underlying feeling, and this has created a personal common ground that we all can relate to in our own way. From here on out, moving forward, no matter who you are or where you are from – we can ask the question of “how was your experience with COVID-19?”
Common ground for all people of Earth, right now at least. The generations will continue, this will become a part of history and eventually all who experienced it will pass on. But maybe for where we are today, this is a way to bring us all together, as one species on this Earth connecting on common ground. Individual towns, cities, states, and countries, but working together towards a common goal, to benefit all. To serve the individuals by serving the collective.
