Some of us are born with a genetic predisposition to addiction. But even low addiction predisposed individuals can become addicted through drug etc misuse because it permanently alters the brain.
The genetic explanation doesn’t say the addict is helpless to the genes inherited, it says we have a predisposition… We have free will…our life choices determine addiction.
Some choose to avoid reality but some have also made bad choices and found themselves biologically hooked. They may want to get back to reality but the biological drive they activated, is very powerful. Others sadly pass on the biological addiction to their unborn, who did not choose this course, it was forced upon them by the person who should be most determined to protect them. As in most things, there is more than one explanation
By escaping you mean participate in a different part of reality. Lol. Everything is reality fools
Hasn’t it been scientifically proven that there is a gene that affects how people can handle alcohol? i actually agree with this scientific finding because i watched people who drank huge amounts of alcohol and always knew i could drink and stop and they could not the same. i was always aware of that. When you step back and look into their family tree you saw the same alcohol consumption so i have always had a bit of sympathy for them knowing it not as easy not to drink alcohol for them as it is for me and then science proved it.
That’s why I drank, to change my feelings, which is what reality is for me
Someone needs to read some of the Big Book before posting something they don’t know enough about alcoholism.
Yes they are it becomes a chemical dependence in the brain

Though it can go both ways I reckon
Not always a good addiction
addicted to Virtual reality , dreamed reality
I escape reality by reading, making jewelry and playing PC games. There are other ways to escape reality than drugs and alcohol that are healthy addictions.

and addicted to oxygen.. dumb ….
More like futile desire to alter reality
Just another example of the most idiotic post getting the most responses.
Aye Aye. People do drugs because it feels like a great big hug.
More compassion, less judgment. Everyone has a cross to bear. Sometimes the best we can do is make the weight a little lighter.
So true—and to deal with anxiety caused by a world that’s gone crazy!! However, even elephants, giraffes, bears in the wild purposely chow down on poisonous berries and leaves because they LIKE the “mind change” it gives them while digesting-I saw this in a documentary once– that showed elephants eating bad plants—afterwards it filmed a full five minutes of the elephants turning round and round–until they just fell out—happy and asleep ?? 🙂
Reality is harder to escape from…..
learn to escape on your own and sit back and enjoy all the money you save from not buying all the drugs and alcohol you would have bought with it.
Addicted to escaping the Pain.
By reading all the responses its obvious addiction is the result of an accumulation of genetics ,events and circumstances and how we as human beings are able to cope with our past present and future. I’d say some even need whatever it is,if they function ,medically. Obviously this is not something that’s black and white.
Escaping reality *-* Ha Corbeau
This is it
Speak for yourself. In the world’s current situation though. I can agree. This is not a reality worth waking up to. Everyone is a victim. We are all supposed to move forward and live together in peace but how can we be expected to do that when there are so many different groups of people who all think they are entitled to special care or treatment…? Shit happened in the past. To all of us. One way or another. How can we ever move forward if no one is willing to forget yesterday and move on to tomorrow.
Absolutely brilliant and accurate…thank you.
That’s the truth.
It’s not reality they escape from. It’s their own tangled illusions and delusions. Reality is intoxicating naturally and healthily.
Theyre just dumb.
Very Deep !!!
this is very true….can’t blame me for trying with all that shit
THIS IS SHHOOOO TRUEEE VIII
Wow….. And I guess I should go running, and eat healthier to cure my bipolar disorder… Hmmm, I do, and ran up to 5km a day… Guess what, still bipolar… Get a clue
Zooo is dqt
Couldn’t agree more
Man I need to smoke rite now
@shama appi joke yawr
This was true for me as a teenager living at home…I did just want to escape reality until I was old enough to move out!! I am lucky I did not let it get to the point of being addicted….but sadly my brother did but he was able to pull himself out of it as an adult.
I’d have to agree but take it one step further. Some use it as a tool to deal with reality. Because some peoples reality is so painful it dibilitates them.
Except when you develop a physical dependence and could actually die from the withdrawal symptoms from alcohol and benzodiazepines.
Sure, it starts out as fun or escapism, I won’t argue that. But it’s circumstantial. What of those whom that develop a physical dependence from being prescribed opioids or benzos? Semantics. Subjective. Circumventing circumstances.
My Son died from withdrawal symptoms from Alcohol and benzodiazepines 6 months ago….whilst trying to escape from severe tinnitus..Tragic..
Sorry to hear that, it is tragic. I’ve struggled with my own addictions off and on, I understand, more than most.
I dont think this is supposed ro be a reason for all addixtion but saying a lot of people use this as a way to cope with life which leads to addiction.
Yup, you’re right & I agree. It’s a very “in general” statement. I was just expressing my subjective perspective. You can be addicted to anything, chocolate, sugar, porn, sex etc etc. On on side of the spectrum there’s escapism, on the other there is pleasure & instant gratification. But it’s all intertwined. I just love philosophy, to be inspired and to humbly inspired. Ya know?

Well let’s see. Grow up in a German household around responsible alcohol drinking entire life. Drink more before age of 21 than the age of 21 to about 35. And did not drink that much before 21. Could have a 6 pack in the fridge for months without touching it. Then all of a sudden around 36 or 37 could not stop drinking. And you think trying to escape reality??
What was the trigger?
Do you want the actual trigger or what psychologist say?
Because if you want the true trigger. I am Christian so let me know I will tell you
i wonder if there was some vitamin or mineral lacking in yr diet which the alcohol had in small doses which made you drink it. not a stupid thought beer has malt and we used to have a healthy dessertspoon of malt full of vitamins etc when we were kids.
Not trying to disprove your thought, by the way good thought. But I was being selfish at that time. And as a Christian, I went long enough living my life the way I wanted to and God finally let me do what I wanted. Until I woke up and realized what I was doing. If you have read the Bible look up the “Prodigal Son” parable. That is me
Scientifically/medically, this statement is quite wrong.
Who says alcohol helps you escape reality??? If anything it dulls the senses but you cannot escape the reality that is…. There is no such thing…
For escaping to reality
I can escape reality through Imagination with no addiction, unlike drugs or alcohol
Maud Baker Paulien Baker
Sheena Espineli tama!!
If people won’t escape realities every now and then, they will simply die before their time. It is necessary to escape for a healthy living but without inducing alcohol or drugs.
Domela Wangdi Bhutia
People are just trying to feel better.

actually yes, my uncle always drink about 0,3-0,5l rice wine when he have short break (5 minute) and continue his work on farm. It absolutely not about reality at all. (Sometimes, he wake up at midnight just for drink then back to sleep)
if you want to stop you will – period …..most do not – selfish & always just out to serve themselves . I been there , any I know that supposed addicts CHOOSE TO BE .and if you observe them – they are selfish assholes in almost every way & fACET of their life – spoiled & egotistical =very often – just out for themselves =always using EVERYONE around them to GET WHAT THEY WANT & very very good at making you feel sorry for them & making you SERVE THEM …come on
Naw not really. I just love changing the station. New music.
Mental obsession coupled with a physical allergy = alcoholism. I know from experience.
Nakia Marie Ouellette whoa. I didn’t realized this
I think i m a great escapist… N i m quite happy with my imaginary fairy-tale world..
Hm., maybe it’s true
seeing through our own pretention is the hardest thing that you will ever do.

Reality is there to create it, not to escape from it. 😉
I’m sorry, but those people can not be helped through friendship because they are unable adapted the reality to their needs and they have a good feel only with alcohol or drugs. They need professional help. These are the unfortunate people who are in a spontaneous or impose way lost the WILL.
people create: reality :that they created.
Chemical addiction is apparently far beyond your understanding. All the best. Hope it never happens in your family.
Dependence is an imbalance in the brain, not always a choice. You cannot leave a quote that goes against what science has proven.
This would compare to babies born with addiction and trying to say that newborns are just trying to escape reality.
Get a grip people.
Well said..thank you
You get a grip … stop taking yourself so seriously.
dependence is a choice
Not a choice at all, its in genetics and proven to not be a CHOICE talk to any addict they will say the same and they will never be able to choose to not be addicted
The genetic link isn’t proven science Nat Wheelz~But the biological and neurological components are well established and proven!!
In it’s simplest terms….it’s a dopamine dump.
Nat Wheelz Don’t believe this grew up with a alcoholic father
The mind is more powerful than we think, we choose our own path by the choices that we make. Excuses have become the norm these days.
I believe depression, anxiety and boredom leads to this problem…
I do not believe that it is genetic- unless it’s depression or anxiety- a chemical imbalance in the brain-
Frank, I did as well and I still stand behind science. There are 9 generations of alcoholics before myself and my twin struggled with dependency for a while.
Not one skeptic touched on the medical fact that babies can be born addicted against their will. That isn’t a choice or a decision they consciously made. Tsk tsk…
Also, I will take myself seriously when I speak on things I have experience and knowledge to base my statement from. Lol you’re a joke, love.
Basically, it doesnt have to be one or the other… babies born in to addiction is one thing, they are chemically dependent through no choice of their own.. People who drive themselves into addiction is another. Science has also proven this, psychological factors play a key role in addiction, which leads to chemical dependence. Drug/alcohol abuse can be hereditary through genetics being psychological similarities.
Profound Statement the Absolute Truth
Dreadful Dark shadows of Fears & Phobias compell them to run away of Reality..
Hmmm..then why do some ppl only drink when they are happy and celebrating and dont drink when they are down and depressed? While still others drink no matter how well reality is going? You sure about your statement? Its pretty matter of fact to include everybody. Im pretty sure its an individual thing and varies from person to person as to when and why they drink..but thats just me i guess. I dont lump ppl together as all being the same.
I could be wrong but when you say people drink when they are happy and celebrating, this could be to escape the reality of celebrating with other people, to escape the reality of having to socialize whilst sober. Just a thought that popped into my head 🙂
Who says other ppl have to be there when your happy? Lol. Maybe your happy, you get some beeror wine and sit under a fall tree for the afternoon listening to your favorite music.
Im just sayin..ppl are as unique as snowflakes..the same reason i might have, yours might be totally different. Not everybody is the same and not everybody who drinks is an addict. I just dont like matter of fact statements that lump everybody together. Because they are not true. Not everybody drinks to escape reality..some drink to celebrate it.
Yes so true.in many cases.I love Pink Floyd but the line comfortably numb always bothered me.then it hit me.it’s not cool to be comfortable with being numb.lost alot of good friends to addition.sad.
True, very true
Yeah…I know a few like this who make other people’s lives hell, because they can’t cope with reality…hmmm…
Yup and they use substance as self-medication
